1903 to Present (And still going strong!)
Back in the 1800’s, McIntosh Baptists worshipped in the Orange Lake Baptist Church, which was known as the Lockbi Baptist Church that was organized in January 1884. Then in 1890, the first Baptist Sunday School, sponsored by Mr. &Mrs. McCormick Neal, met under the trees in Van Ness Park. The first Sunday School superintendent was David B. Dickson.
In 1903, the McIntosh Baptists felt they would like a church here in McIntosh. The first building included J.K. Christian, H.L. Dickson, and J.S. Thomas. The present building was dedicated in July, 1903, with 33 charter members. The first pastor was A.L. Prisco, with the dedication sermon preached by Dr. C.C. Carroll of Ocala.
The Women’s Missionary Society was organized in 1903 with Mrs. J.K. Christian as president. That society or union now known as the WMU, has continued meeting every month since the then.
In the early days, worship services were held on the 3rd Sunday of each month. In 1934, services increased to twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. By 1942, services began being held on a full time basis.
The pastorium, located on Highway 320 was built in 1951. On July 4, 1951, Pastor Charles Millican and his wife moved in. The organ, piano, pulpit furniture and other appointments were given by Mr. & Mrs. L. K. Edwards, Jr. Pews were bought by members of the congregation. The stained glass windows were installed in 1968 in loving memory of Mrs. J.K. Christian. She had become a member of the church in 1903, coming from First Baptist Church in Lincoln, Illinois.
E.B. Boyer, a member of this church from 1904 and 1918, responded to God’s call to the ministry and was ordained here and later served several congregations in mid-Florida. He retired in 1967 and died in 1969, just short of his 100th birthday.
In 1982 the sanctuary was remodeled and the pews recovered. During that same year the Fellowship Hall was completed with the help of many members and friends working long, hard hours.
In 2003, we celebrated 100 years of service to God by replacing the carpet, pew upholstery and adding sanctuary lights. On Celebration Sunday in 2003, members of the church wore clothing reminiscent of the 1900’s, enjoyed carriage rides and enjoyed a wonderful meal together after the morning sermon.
This year we are celebrating our 117th year of serving Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our mission is to share God’s love and his forgiveness of sin through the death, burial and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ.
If you would like to be sure that you will spend eternity with God, we invite you to come worship with us, or call our church office at (352) 591-3253 for help with this matter.
